Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 ties together a basic yet likable fighting system with plenty of goodies that fanatics of the anime franchise will greatly appreciate. The new Ultimate Contest and Hero’s History aren’t too shabby, and the ability to super-power your character with Summoning makes fighting unpredictable. Past that, though, it’s routine Ninja territory, with repetitive fighting action, a slew of unlockables that fail to serve the casual player and a lack of four-player interactivity. It’s decent fun, but this Ninja needs to learn some new tricks.
Sins of a Solar Empire combines the depth of traditional turn-based games like Civilization with the action of real-time strategy (RTS) games like Command & Conquer. The result is a rich and highly detailed game that pleases fans of both types of strategy. The game can be a little slow when first starting out, and the network planetary jump paths make it difficult to get a sense of where to establish defensive borders. Although the game gets fully underway once players are able to set up a thriving economy backed by a fleet of ships, those who like to build up fast and get straight into the fight might be put off by Sins’ pacing. Even two players on a small map can take hours to finish a single session. Those looking for a break from hitting the End Turn button until something happens should be happy with the new pacing and unique experience Sins of a Solar Empire brings.
It’s bad enough for a game to suffer from recycling, but bad recycling is even worse. That’s the case with Lost In Blue 3, Konami’s latest “stuck-on-a-desert-island” Nintendo DS release. You have to look after several “lucky” survivors who seem incapable of taking care of themselves. This nagging flaw, combined with dreary island exploration and only a handful of acceptable mini-games, results in a loss of interest and fun. Do yourself a favor and go watch Cast Away on DVD instead.
